Ocala: heART of Florida

This painted horse form was created for the 20th anniversary "herd" of Horse Fever horses in Ocala, FL. The Horse Fever project is a fundraiser to support the arts in Ocala and Marion County; the original herd of painted horses were auctioned off with the proceeds eventually forming the foundation of the Marion Cultural Alliance.

For the 20th anniverary, in 2020, artists submitted design proposals that were selected by a panel of judges. Patrons then selected the horses that they wanted to purchase from the designs. The artists had about six weeks to complete the painting.

Ocala: heART of Florida was designed to highlight the natural wonders of central Florida, like Silver Springs, and the horse capital, as well as several cultural icons of Ocala: The historic Marion Theater, The Reilly Arts Center, and the Appleton Museum of Art.

Purchased by the David and Lisa Midgett Foundation, the horse will eventually be on permanent view at the Reilly Arts Center campus.
