These watercolors include some of Tyrus Clutter's first and most recent explorations with this medium on book pages. Francis Schaeffer, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and C.S. Lewis show up here as well as in some of the altarpiece constructions. The third image on the bottom row comes from the photoshoot the artist did when developing ideas for the composition of the woodcut Exemplar. The second image on the middle row was produced for the 2009 Small Works Auction that has become a tradition at the CIVA biennial conferences. It is an image of Sophie Scholl, an anti-Nazi martyr who died for her involvement with the White Rose resistance group. The second from left image on the bottom row portrays Dag Hammarskjold, former Secretary General of the United Nations who died in a plane crash that many believe to have been an assasination. His private journal writings--Markings, published after his death--have been inspirational for many. As the series has grown the artist has entitled the project Saints, Sinners, Martyrs, & Misfits. There is an essay by Tyrus about this series on his blog--Tyrus's Eye on Art. Keep checking this page for continual updates and new works.
